Abstract

The author, through the report of the development a clinical case, compares the origins of narcissism to a small town where fires of small proportions, initially, start taking place, but which does not have a suitable fire department or civil defense. As a response, the residents invent methods, the best possible ones but usually inadequate, to control those fires which progressively become more like true (emotional) fires. The author goes on to state that the narcissistic patient gets down to business and desperately tries to do everything by him or herself. Thus we are in the field of traumatisms by object’s absence or inadequacy, at best, or, in the worst case; the patient has to save him or herself from a disturbing or invasive object, building protective barriers. As a consequence of that situation, the patient with a narcissistic structure has no confidence in the object, and the new therapist-object must first gain the confidence through the field, functioning for a long time as small town new fire department or civil defense, making him or herself absolutely available.
