In 1919, Freud came across Hoffman’s “The Sandman” and introduced us to Nathaniel and Olympia. Based on that text, he elaborated on the Uncanny (Das Unheimliche) and proposed a psychoanalytical aesthetics hinged upon the quality of feeling, where the object of investigation is not the beautiful, but the fearful. In 2011, in the 21st century, there comes the movie “Coraline,” based on the same-name book, by British author Neil Gaiman. It tells the story of a teen girl and her rag doll. Using this movie as a clinical vignette, we are prompted to rethink the contemporaneous psychoanalytic practice: invention-tradition, and the vitality of the Freudian stranger.
