Abstract

In this paper, the author addresses parenting from the standpoint of its construction as psychoanalytic concept, including its origin in France in the 1950s. The opinions of some important authors within this field are drawn upon, and parenting is given the same status as other topics that are relevant to analytical clinical practice, especially regarding gender difference and contemporary aspects of parenting. These aspects are discussed and illustrated by a child’s clinical case vignette, in which the challenge to be and to become a parent is brought to the forefront.
