This article talks about the alleged racism of Monteiro Lobato, considered the founding father of Brazilian Children›s Literature. The article’s author, when re-reading her great-grandfather›s books, realizes that certain expressions and phrases of that time sound prejudiced and outdated. And as a result of her own experiences as an immigrant and her political activism in favor of racial and social justice she decides to update the language and the imagery of the characters so as to reflect modern society. Through this updating, Cleo also aims to disseminate Lobato›s legacy and memory, allowing his reading to reach contemporary readers and to last for another 80 years.
