A psychoanalytic look at the traumatic effects of racism

The present work aims to reflect on the traumatic effects of racism and its psychological consequences. Grada Kilomba pointed out the constant and repeated experiences of racial prejudice and exclusion that black people face daily. This interference, in laplanchean terms, which has accompanied black individuals since the beginning of their psychic existence, leaves deep and traumatic marks in their subjectivity. Given the racist context which we live in, where psychoanalysis itself is formed by a majority of white people, how can we, psychoanalysts, work to reduce the effects of this deadly form of violence? What is needed for a white psychoanalyst to hear from a black analyst? To better discuss these issues, I will bring some vignettes from my clinical experience with two young black men who sought treatment about three years ago.
