Abstract

Esther Bick is renowned in our setting, especially for the technique she developed to investigate the psyche in babies, based on their daily routine and on their interaction within the family environment. She believed that was the best way to understand the development of human personality, setting aside all theories we have been introduced to. To achieve that, she devised a method, later named after her, whereby the mother-baby dyad and its surrounding elements are systematized. Other important contributions to the psychoanalytic theory are the concepts of psychic skin, second skin formation, and adhesive identification, which deal with very primeval mental processes at work in primitive minds.
