Abstract

Inspired by Freud’s text On transience (1916/2010a), I propose the phenomenon of capturing transience as an event in which human beings are faced with it. To do this, I explore it as seen through traditional Japanese aesthetics, particularly by thinking the aesthetics of mono no aware as a means of capturing transience. I present three marks caused by transience: what is inherently known to exist, what is not known and what cannot be known; and I correlate them with the lack that is evidenced by the capture of it. I propose a state of mourning-melancholy related to the mono no aware which, instead of impoverishing the world and the Ego, enriches them. Finally, I associate the aesthetics of the mono no aware with the “here and now” of the analytical session, going towards the Unheimlich; and as its counterpoint the discontent generated by the denial of transience in contemporaneity.
