Abstract

This article has an interesting trajectory and, in my opinion, is worthy of note, which is what I intend to do in the following lines.
Before it actually became written material in its current form, Between Barbarity and Messianism was presented on two separate occasions, with two different versions that caused completely different reactions.
For the first time, I was invited to participate in a panel at the 35th Latin American Psychoanalysis Congress, held in October 2024 in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The panel proposed to talk about “ethnic and political conflicts and psychoanalytic aspects” and had as its central theme the current phase of the conflict in Gaza.
Despite the number of questions during and after the presentation, I consider that the paper presented at the FEPAL Congress produced a challenging, fruitful and interesting dialogue, having even led to the invitation to publish in this journal.
On the second occasion on which the article was presented, the reactions were quite different. I believe they were revealing of the reality that we all see today in Brazil and in many places around the world. [...]

Professor do Departamento de Sociologia e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em História Social, ambos da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Coordena o Núcleo Interdisciplinar de Estudos Judaicos da Universidade e o Laboratório Extremos: Violência, Política e Religião, em conjunto com a Professora Christina Vita. Pesquisador do Centro de Estudos de Antissemitismo da Universidade Hebraica de Jerusalém.
