Reflections on jouissance in the holocaust based on the film Zone of Interest

The author reflects on the film Zone of Interest (2023), which tells the story of the family life of Auschwitz commander Rudolf Hoess. He lived with his family in a pleasant house next to the Extermination Camp. The film, which attempts to be faithful to the research carried out by the production, shows the dissociation between the family’s ordinary life, despite the horror beyond the walls of their residence.
The author investigates the extraction of jouissance from torture, deaths, exploitation and the annihilation of prisoners. The author provides theoretical and historical elements to support psychoanalytic thinking on the motivations of the Holocaust.
