Identification as a shared scene
from trauma to writing

This article examines the concept of identification in psychoanalysis, as formulated by Freud and reworked by Ferenczi, articulating it with contemporary autofictional literature. In Freud, identification is often described as a constitutive operation of the ego, inseparable from both the loss and the introjection of the object. Ferenczi, in turn, when investigating trauma and disavowal, shows how identification may arise as a survival strategy, when the subject is forced to identify with the aggressor. Autofiction, in this study, is approached as a third path: by transforming experiences of pain into narrative, it makes possible a psychic elaboration (both individual and collective). To this end, the analysis draws on the works of Annie Ernaux, Grada Kilomba and Édouard Louis, in which writing operates as testimony, reinscribing in the social fabric the marks of class, racism and homophobia.
