Abstract

Well, thank you very much. Good morning, everyone, to those present at the headquarters of the Brazilian Society and also to those joining us via Zoom. First of all, of course, I want to thank you for inviting me and regret that we couldn't meet in person, as we all surely would have liked. In that sense, I don't want to miss this opportunity to publicly express, as I have already done privately, my solidarity with the entire population of southern Brazil, who have been experiencing, for several months now, a very critical situation regarding the weather, and all the hardships, misfortunes, and losses in every sense that a catastrophe like these floods produces. In fact, the impossibility had something to do with that, because just a few hours before I was due to take the flight to Porto Alegre, a state of emergency was declared, and I've been following this situation ever since, because in Porto Alegre I have many dear colleagues with whom we have maintained a very close relationship, both academically and professionally, as well as personally, for many years. Therefore, I was interested in initially expressing to you this concern, which I understand still persists, and which we hope can be resolved with the least amount of suffering as soon as possible. We also hope that, once this situation is resolved, we can actually have the opportunity to meet in person, given that the personal encounter and dialogue that in-person meetings allow us is usually freer and richer than what we can achieve virtually.
