Abstract

This paper discusses the psychic transmission of traumas across generations as well as the importance of relational psychoanalysis as a field for the understanding of, and intervention in, diseases resulting from toxic and traumatic relational processes. These processes involve situations in which unconscious agreements and pacts allow pathological grief, shameful secrets or traumatic events, submitted to radical defenses such as denial and disregard, to manifest in the mind of one or more descendants, putting their mental development at risk. The study is based on the treatment of a family that seeks psychotherapeutic help due to the drug addiction of a son whose father suffered from traumatic grief on account of his birth.
