Abstract

The author discusses, in the first place, psychoanalytic pluralism within its history and the divergent currents and schools that have led psychoanalysis to seem a confused conglomerate of opposite theories and non-complementary techniques. Next, he presents the attempts of theoreticians to once more unify psychoanalysis around a single clinical theory or around convergent technical approaches – proposals not only discussed but also refuted by the author when he suggests important differences between fact and clinical observation, as well as between method and technique. In defining the analytic method more accurately from its singularity, the author concludes by proposing the multifactorial conception to explain psychoanalytic pluralism, and the analytic method as the unifying factor of current psychoanalysis.
