Early trauma
from the body to the dream

The author examines the consequences of early psychological trauma from a metapsychological perspective. The starting point is the idea that trauma depends on the relationship between lived experience and the psyche’s capacity to represent it. When, in early relationships with the primary object, there are disruptions in the rhythm between presence and absence, difficulties in symbolization may arise, along with an impoverishment of the dream function and an operational mode of functioning marked by factual thinking and limited psychological elaboration. Under these conditions, the traumatic experience may find a site of inscription in the body, manifesting as somatization. In contrast, when symbolization is possible, trauma can be transformed into representation, dream, and creation, as observed in literary forms such as autofiction, which allow for the narrative reworking of traumatic experiences.
