Observation of the mother-baby relationship and clinical understanding of primitive mental states

Analyzing vignettes of the observation of a mother-baby relationship (Bick’s method) and of the treatment of a girl aged 3 ½ years with predominantly primitive mental states, the author shows the benefits of infant observation to the understanding of primitive communication skills and of nonverbal language. She also highlights that the reactivation and updating of the baby we used to be brings back both pleasurable experiences and family misfortunes, urging the analyst to prevent that or include that in his/her personal and therapeutic approaches. She considers that the ambivalence of holding a baby in the lap and the lack of containment of a girl who seemed to be unconstrained in the room, where she struggled about, are possible triggers of primitive anxieties experienced in a given period of the observers’ early childhood.
