The author initially points out that the difference between the concepts of “I” and “Ego” is not semantic, but conceptual, attributing to the “Self ” the meaning of the true “I”, in the Winnicottian sense, keeping the Ego in the place of a psychic instance. component of this whole. It then discusses the origins of ideals as happening within the Self, as a more global representation of the subject, based on unconscious fantasies. He situates the emergence of the concept of the Ego ideal in Freud’s 1914 work on narcissism, describing some changes introduced by other authors, who placed the Ego as part of the Self, and the relationship of this concept with ideals as a conscious expression of unconscious fantasies, their difference to idealizations, their relationship with drives and the special types of ideals that derive from them, and what is the role of the psychoanalyst taking care of patients who seek refuge in illusions and ideals.
